This paper examines the Free Aceh Movement Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) in Indonesia since 1976. It presents a detailed ideological and organizational structure of the national liberation movement with the aim of increasing understanding of its history, motivations, and organizational dynamics, including, recruitment, financing, weapons procurement and military capacity. The study further analyzes GAM's decisions, maneuvers and statements during the peace process and the dynamics that ultimately led to its collapse in May 2003.
