This briefing examines the North Korean nuclear standoff in light of the events from October 2006. It assess Pyongyang’s test of a nuclear device, the strong condemnation by the UN Security Council, South Korea, China, Japan and the US, and the resumption of the Six-Party Talks. While the briefing considers the revival of a diplomatic process an encouraging sign, it regards committed bilateral negotiations between North Korea and the US a key element for solving the North Korean nuclear issue.
