This paper discusses multiculturalism in Denmark and Sweden. The author describes how multiculturalism in Sweden has become less viable as a form of social compromise and more vulnerable to political populism. In Denmark, local policy implementation and pragmatic standards of diversity management have also created hostile political undertones. The paper suggests that the difficulties encountered with multiculturalism in both countries are typical of the adaptive politics and symbolic difficulties of small states in the face of wider global transformations.
