This paper analyzes the main characteristics of European higher education, the Bologna Process and the Lisbon Strategy. The authors argue that European higher education is facing major challenges to improve its competitiveness in the global market. The paper concludes that the Bologna Process is showing substantial progress in reaching its objectives and that European higher education is changing and aspiring to be better prepared for global competition.
