This briefing examines political violence in the city of Maan in the south of Jordan in 2002 and 2003. It explains that reasons for the political violence include its political status in the country and recent transformation from a regional hub to a peripheral town; its deteriorating socio-economic conditions, insular social and cultural traditions; rising tensions between residents and the police force; and armed, militant Islamism. However, the briefing underlines that several phenomena exist not only on a regional, but also on a national level.
