This briefing examines the factors that influence Iraqi Shiism, including communitarian ties, religious polarization and activism, growing nationalism, and increased power of local groups. It also describes the multitude of political and religious organizations that seek to give it voice, such as the Hawza. Furthermore, it explains that the US remains a target of criticism for Shiites as long as it has overall responsibility for security in Iraq.
