This briefing outlines the challenges for the Palestinian transition after the death of Yasir Arafat in November 2004. It gives an overview of Arafat's leadership and examines the main political projects for the new leadership. The authors argue that the new Palestinian leadership has to earn its legitimacy from the Palestinian people and has to deliver results. The new Palestinian leadership also needs the support of the Palestinian political system and, therefore, an agreement with Fatah on the conduction of elections.
