This paper explores the development of radical Islamism in Algeria and examines the outlook and strategies of the main Islamist movements. The paper pays special attention to the Islamist movements' relations with the state and each other; it focuses on the links between activism and violence and addresses the problem of political reform and democratization. The report then gives an overview of the development of Algerian Islamism and introduces the FIS movement, several armed movements and the Algerian derivatives of the Muslim Brotherhood.
