This bulletin examines EU-China relations in the wake of their 12-13 July 2016 Summit, where obvious differences between the two sides prevented the traditional issuing of a joint statement. Above and beyond the usual frictions over social-political-legal norms, the two sides clashed over China’s insistence on increased EU market access, despite the continued protection of its own markets. To avoid unemployment-causing problems such as this in the future, the text’s author argues that EU members should coordinate their policies towards China more closely.
