This briefing examines political violence in Aceh. It gives an overview of the conflict in the region striving for independence, and outlines the goals of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). The paper further examines counter-insurgency operations of the state police and military and efforts for peace negotiations. It concludes by stating that the independence ambitions of Aceh are not supported by the central government and the international community.
