This publication focuses on the changes in Japanese thinking about the US that have taken place in recent years. It analyzes the economic problems in the US, as well as worries about a military retreat from Asia. On the other hand it looks at US concerns about the ability of it to compete in world markets and about Japan's economic rise. The author states that the question whether the two countries can help each other cope with the problems of success will test the US-Japan relationship.
