Dec 1992
This publication focuses on the December 1992 Legislative Yuan election in Taiwan, where for the first time all the members are elected from Taiwan. It analyzes the turning point this represents in the island’s domestic politics, as well as the implications this carries for Washington and Beijing. Furthermore, it discusses the gap between the island’s economic prominence and its second-class diplomatic status. The author warns that growing independence sentiment in Taiwan could lead to a critical confrontation with Beijing, which has threatened to use military force to prevent secession.
