This paper focuses on economic and political development in South Korea as well as handicaps the change to democracy has brought, such as social disruption, demands for higher wages and overspending. Furthermore, the paper proposed necessary changes that have to be undertaken by Kim Young Sam, who was elected in 1993. The author states that changes will not be easily achieved and that Kim is likely to find himself caught between Washington’s demands for trade concessions and an increasingly nationalistic Korean electorate.
