This paper, written on the eve of former-President Clinton’s 1993 trip to Tokyo, puts forward assessments and expectations of 14 leading Asian and Pacific journalists regarding America’s new leadership. The authors agree that the tough US position on trade comes at a time when the US government has not shown any real commitment to regional security in Asia. On the other hand, there is disagreement concerning the president's emphasis on human rights. The authors stress that it is evident that the US has a large reservoir of goodwill throughout the region, but that dissatisfactions are rising.
