This paper focuses on the rising incidence of environmental problems and hard currency shortages across Asia and discusses a proposed solution: massive lending by multilateral development banks for environmental projects. The author states that despite a flood of assistance, the outcome of financially supported forestry projects raises serious doubts about the approach. The author concludes that smaller-scale assistance programs based on alternative models may be more economically sound and beneficial to the environment.
