This publication discusses the diversity of ethnic groups in China which include the majority Han nationality and 55 minority groups. The author argues that for centuries, China has held together a vast multicultural, multiethnic and multilinguistic nation despite alternating periods of political centralization and fragmentation. He states, however, that cultural and linguistic cleavages could worsen in a China weakened by internal strife, inflation, uneven growth or a post-Deng struggle for succession.
