This publication examines the spread of HIV/AIDS not as a pandemic but as a collection of distinct regional epidemics. Focusing on the spread of HIV/AIDS in Asia, the authors compare patterns in the spread of the epidemic to those in Europe, North America and Africa. Given the comparative lateness in the spread of the epidemic in the region, they examine why and how the Asian epidemic threatens to become worse than in other parts of the world. They argue that the answer to these questions lies in the nature of the Asian epidemic and in the region's huge population.
