This publication discusses redesigning US - Japan trade policies. The author argues that a "get tough" policy driven by disputes involving specific industries is in sufficient and that the US also needs a "get smart" approach more focused on resolving fundamental trade imbalances and pushing for growth and deregulation in Japan. Further, she states that Japan must be encouraged to stimulate domestic demand in order to change the driving force behind its economy from exports to domestic consumption. The US, on the other hand, should work toward an economic integration through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and possibly even allowing Asian countries to join the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
