This paper addresses the transition processes in Asian countries bordering the Pacific and argues that these economies are growing beyond the control of national governments and beyond what their environment can sustain. The author discusses the problem of the growing and aging Asian populations, which puts pressure on infrastructure and social structures. The paper also analyzes the challenges faced by the Asian political and security systems. The author concludes that in the dynamic situation confronting Asia, the US needs to stay involved in the region, to be patient and take the long view.
