This paper discusses democratic politics and political engineering in the Asia Pacific region. The author describes how it can be difficult to find political balance in ethnically diverse, emerging democracies. The paper explains that Asian political parties usually serve a country best when they are limited in number, strong and broad-based. The author states that much can be learned from the general Asia Pacific efforts at political engineering, including the need for a cautious approach that minimizes unforeseen consequences and costs.
