While Sri Lankans are excited that President Maithripala Sirisena met the world’s leaders during the G7 Summit in May 2016, doubts have also arisen over why he was invited to participate. Was it an attempt to bring the island nation under the influence of those who seek to contain China in the Indian Ocean? Further, what was Sri Lanka’s motive for participating in the outreach session of the summit? Was it to deemphasize its relationship with India to earn the trust of China and others? This brief grapples with these specific questions and more.
