This paper discusses the economic crisis in Asia and argues that the conditions that precipitated it are by no means unique to the region. The author explains that these conditions have their roots in badly managed government liberalization of the financial sector, excessive borrowing and lending by private industry and the inability of key players to accurately assess risk. The author suggests how governments, international organizations and domestic banks should coordinate their efforts in order to avoid such crises.
