This paper discusses the possibilities for poverty reduction in eastern India. The authors describe how the Indian economy's strong growth has given additional impetus to long-standing efforts to develop the country's poorest rural areas. The paper states that success in rural development efforts in India is vital to maintaining broad support for economic reforms and for sustaining the nation's growth.
