This paper focuses on the United States' struggle for free trade in Asia. In particular, it considers how the US trade deficit has influenced US public support and how the challenge of advancing the free trade agenda in Asia should be approached and reformed. The author states that the Asian bias against imports, which has been a cornerstone of Asia's successful growth strategy, has come into question as a result of the economic crises of the 1990s; but, he cautions that regaining America's full-support for free trade will not be easy.
