This paper focuses on the influence of coal and petroleum on Asia's economic development. It analyzes the role gas should have in Asia's future in order for Asia to become more independent from oil and to alleviate the pollution produced by coal burning. The author argues that the long-term political and economic relationships required for maintaining gas trade could also help to stabilize the region. The paper also discusses obstacles to increasing the use of natural gas, such as the lack of sufficient terminals, long-distance pipelines and local network systems for its transport, and how those obstacles can be removed.
