This report provides information on the rule of Congolese President Laurent-Désiré Kabila and on backgrounds of the armed conflict that started soon after Kabila’s rise to power. The paper sheds light on the present conflict focusing on the end of the Mobuto regime and Kabila’s resurfacing. Subsequently, the paper addresses the philosophy and leadership of Kabila’s Alliance des Forces Démocratiques pour la Libération du Congo (AFDL), including the failure to create a pluralistic regime as well as reactions and challenges to the regime.
