This report provides a detailed evaluation of the results of the Arusha peace talks in Burundi and the challenges that have to be met if conditions for a lasting peace are to be created. The paper provides information on the state of the Arusha talks, focusing on the discussions, the record of the Nyerere approach and the nomination of Nelson Mandela as a mediator. Subsequently, the paper explores challenges to the peace process, including violence, conflicting political forces and the actual transition process.
