This report provides background information on the conflict in Sudan, focusing on the warring factions, the steps necessary for peace, and the issues of democracy, human rights and terrorism. Subsequently, the paper addresses the causes and consequences of the war and reviews several international peace initiatives. The report makes clear that the situation in Sudan is far more complex than normally portrayed and argues that a unique window of opportunity for peace is open, but only slightly.
