This publication surveys Moldova’s 25 years of independence from the USSR and highlights the pressing problems which Moldovans still face. The latter include 1) the question of national identity; 2) the country’s imperfect political system and party system; 3) assorted social and economic issues; 4) the instability and changeability of Moldova’s foreign policy, to include a growing disillusionment with the idea of European integration; and 5) the Transnistria problem and the reasons why Chisinau has not managed to resolve it.
