This bulletin takes stock of East Asia’s crumbling security environment, with a particular emphasis on the risks posed by 1) China’s growing geostrategic strength, which could upend the US’ role as a key security guarantor in the East Asia region; 2) the unresolved tensions in the South and East China Seas; and 3) North Korea’s continued ‘bad boy’ behavior.
