This paper reviews Finland’s policy towards the Aland Islands, which are increasingly being menaced by Russia’s aggressive military posture in the Baltic Sea region. Helsinki’s politicians and military commanders have called for the strategically important islands’ defenses to be improved, which the paper’s authors believe is appropriate. They also believe Finland should cooperate more closely with NATO and Sweden in order to boost its deterrence and defensive capabilities.
