This article outlines major advancements in the ability to predict, explain and prevent large-scale organized violence. The author attributes these milestones to improvement in conflict theory, methodology and the growing availability of information in electronic databases. After introducing several established risk factors for the outbreak of violence, the author argues that the best means to prevent subsequent outbreaks is to produce a stable and institutionalized settlement built on political reform, elections and democratization.
