This report discusses the importance of the April 2007 Nigerian gubernatorial and national elections for the country's development toward political and economic stability. The author suggests several policy steps for Nigerians and the international community, including election monitoring, strengthening health care infrastructure and improving security. The author explains that as Africa’s most populous country and the home of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest Muslim population, Nigeria is a crucial country whose elections will dramatically affect the future of the continent.
