This paper examines the traditional, irregular and catastrophic challenges as outlined in the 2005 National Defense Strategy of the US. It also introduces the concept of "hybrid norms." The author briefs on the defense-relevant calculations after 11 September 2001, the development of military strategic thinking and use of concepts. He identifies a gap between definitions of individual challenges and the application in defense and security policymaking.
