This paper examines the dramatic shortage of nurses, doctors and general health sector employees in Malawi. The author analyzes the employment preferences of public sector registered nurses working in the country and identifies the range and relative importance of the factors that affect their motivation. The paper explores the work preferences of registered nurses and examines the factors that might persuade them to continue the profession within their home country rather than abroad.
