This commentary reviews President Erdogan’s systematic purging and restructuring of major Turkish institutions – including the army, intelligence services and Ministry of the Interior – since the failed military coup in July 2016. Among other benefits, the purges have enabled Erdogan to weed out followers of Fethullah Güllen from government posts and to consolidate his own power.
