This brief examines China’s uneasy relationship with the existing liberal international order, despite its oft repeated commitment to globalization. Given the incompatibility of this order with Beijing’s governance model, which has led to frequent clashes during climate talks, arbitration sessions and open market negotiations, the text’s author closes by encouraging the EU to protect and promote its anti-authoritarian values.
