This paper discusses the paradox that freight transport has almost vanished from the mainstream economic geography and development studies since the 1970s and is less often mentioned in studies of international industrial development and global commodity chains. The author analyzes the consequences of leaving freight transport out of the value chain and argues that it has had serious consequences for economic development, especially in the peripheral parts of the world and for our understanding of rural poverty.
