This paper focuses on the demographic changes and economic development in China's Xinjiang province since 1949. The author argues that these two dimensions have been the root causes of instability and tension within the region. Other areas of discussion include the causal relationship between increases in population and the creation of wealth, Han immigration, the poverty of Uyghur farmers and uneven economic growth.
