This paper addresses constitutional secularism in India by examining the relationship of the Supreme Court to secularism. For this purpose the author evaluates the Supreme Court's definition of religion, religious practices, religious organizations, and religious freedom. In conclusion, the study argues that the Supreme Court has challenged secularism and multiculturalism and is thus partly responsible for the rise of India’s Hindu nationalist parties.
