This publication discusses challenges in relation to demilitarization of militias in post-conflict societies. It focuses in particular on the "White Army" militia in South Sudan. The authors identify local armed groups and militias as the most serious problem confronting transition from conflict to peace in Africa. They demonstrate the complexity of disarmament processes and highlight policy considerations for demilitarization processes based on the lessons learned from South Sudan.
