This workshop report summarizes the debates held at the "Claim-Making and Large-Scale Historical Processes in the Late Twentieth Century" conference in March 1997 at Stanford University. The first panel discussed globalization and social claims. The second panel highlighted state formation and claim-making, focusing on the dimensions of war and institutions of violence. The third panel analyzed identities and social power in the context of globalization. The fourth panel focused on claims to sovereignty in the former Soviet Union.
