This fact sheet provides a definition of a dirty bomb and examines the damage that can be caused by its explosion. The authors analyze effects of the level of dirty bombs radiation exposure, why they could be used by terrorists, how hard it is to make one and what the public should do in the event of a dirty bomb explosion. The paper concludes by saying that an attack with a highly lethal dirty bomb is unlikely while an attack with a relatively weak one is more likely, but would result in much less damage and disruption.
