This paper explains the three dimensions of biomedicine known as patient care, research and teaching and adds a critical fourth dimension, activism. The author illustrates his personal involvement in two 20th century physician movements, designed to alter national and international policy and to inform and educate physicians, the public, and policymakers on the life and health impact of nuclear war.
