This report assesses the democratization efforts in UN peace operations and outlines policy options for UN assistance in democratization processes in post-conflict societies. The authors present two options: the first holds that the UN should only prioritize security issues and prevent conflicts, while the second advocates comprehensive democratization initiatives by the UN. They draw on findings from the peace operations in East Timor and Afghanistan.
