This paper analyzes the power structure behind the rule of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and introduces the initiative of the South African Development Community (SADC) to overcome Zimbabwe's political and economic crisis. The paper shed's light on Mugabe's strategy to stay in power, describes the setup of his power structure and comments on rivals within his ZANU-PF party. Subsequently, the paper introduces the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, investigates the SADC's regional initiative and points to preconditions for sustainable change. The paper argues that the SADC leaders can prove "African solutions to African problems" is a viable concept.
