This paper identifies the primary determinants of India's economic success while also pointing out the country's drawbacks, particularly its poor performance regarding human development. Furthermore, the author assesses the influence of India's democratic political system concluding that it grants greater assurance of economic development. However, he identifies three drags on India's long-term prospects, namely preferential set-asides, corruption and coalition governance. The author finally analyzes India's position in the world, focusing on the country's relations with Pakistan, China and the US and asserting India's increased diplomatic influence.
