This issue explores the increasing strategic significance and prioritization of Africa in US foreign policy. It first reviews the history of US foreign policy on the continent, outlines levels of engagement and analyzes proposals for a new Africa Command and the rationale behind it. Further essays take up various security issues related to Africa: maritime security, terrorism and counterterrorism and peacekeeping. The authors aim to provide a context for and to probe some of the ramifications of the current elevation of Africa in US national security strategy.
