This paper contends a quiet shift in geopolitics has been taking place, with East Asia and the Middle East drawing closer together. To highlight what’s going on, the text’s author analyzes 1) China’s presence in Middle East, with a brief discussion of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), followed by a deeper look at how this initiative is shaping China’s relations with states across the region; 2) the response of Middle Eastern states; and 3) how US-China competition plays out in the region.
