This monograph examines young South Africans’ perceptions of politics and the factors that influence their participation in elections. The text’s key findings include the following – 1) there is a major difference in voter registration levels between South Africans aged 18 to 19 (33%) and 20 to 29 (64%); 2) although young people acknowledge the importance of voting, they don’t necessarily believe it’s the best way to bring about change; and 3) it’s the combination of distrust in government and “political limitations” that deter young people from engaging in politics. In light of their findings, the authors outline what the South African government, political parties and other stakeholders might do to reverse young peoples’ distrust.
